6T is the New 5X

This post goes out to all my dedicated LG Nexus 5X owners who are still waiting for that next "Great Value" phone to arrive.

I bought the 5X years ago and was really happy with the great performance, good camera, and native Andriod OS.  I got the latest version of Android, with all the latest updates, without any added bloatware.  It even had a fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone, which is probably the most practical place for it.  I got all of that  for around $400!  It wasn't a flagship phone, but it could handle any app I downloaded, and all for 1/2 the flagship price.

By the time I started wanting a new phone, Google was selling the Pixel 2, which was sold for around $750.  That was too big of a price increase for me.  Where was my 5x value replacement?  I waited even longer, and eventually the creepy Google search spies started showing me ads for the One Plus 6T.  I've read about One Plus phones in the past, but was happy with my 5x, so I never bought one.  After realizing my 5x no longer is updated, and after watching my apps open 5-10 seconds after I press the icon, I'm pretty sure I'm buying a new device within the next few months.

I think the One Plus 6T may be my next device.  From what I've read about it:

  • It has a great processor - maybe the best one out
  • Fingerprint scanner - I'd rather it be on the back, but in display is new and nerd sexy
  • Good camera
  • Standard Stuff - NFC, wifi, bluetooth
  • Newest version of Android with minimal bloatware
I'll get all of that starting at $549 for a flagship-ish phone, which I'm more than ok with.  The only reservation I had was with size.  I said "was", because I stopped by T-Mobile to hold one next to my 5x.  They were the same width, but the 6T was only about 1/4 inch taller than my 5x.  I was surprised, since the screen size was much bigger.  It must be because the bezels are smaller.

The only other negative I found out was the lack of a head phone jack.  I guess that's ok since I'll save a little money on extra chargers.  Both the 5X and 6T use a type C charger, so I won't have to buy a bunch of new car and office chargers, which is nice.

So, if you're a current LG Nexus 5X owner waiting for your next value phone, you might want to go with the One Plus 6T.  I haven't yet, because I'm cheap, but I probably will have one in the next few months.
