Yay for Frozen Fish!

So I know this sounds odd, but I'm really happy I bought a bag of frozen fish the other day.  It started when I was listening to NPR, and this guy was talking about how you should save money and just by bags of frozen fish.  Having worked in a few grocery stores, I realized he was right.  Almost all of the the fish I've seen in the seafood departments arrives frozen and is thawed out.  Customers buy it thinking it's fresh fish, but it's not.  At least the bags of frozen fish are frozen onsite, and I don't thaw them out until I'm ready to cook them.

I was able to buy a 2lb bag of frozen wild caught salmon for only $8.  Here's how I prepared it; it was super easy:

  1. Take however much fish you'd like to cook out of the freezer and place it in the refrigerator one day before you're planning on cooking it.  The instructions on the bag say to remove it from the vacuum sealed packing, but I've found that doesn't make a difference.
  2. Set the oven to broil.
  3. Spray a cookie sheet or baking pan with nonstick olive oil spray.
  4. Use a paper towel to pat down the fish.
  5. Season the fish with salt and pepper.  I actually just use Lawry's Seasoned Salt.
  6. Place the fish skin side down on the pan/cookie sheet and broil for 7 minutes.
That's all.  It's really cool for me, because my wife doesn't like fish.  I end up not buying it, because it would smell up the refrigerator.  It doesn't smell while it's frozen.  I hope this makes someone else just a happy as it made me.  I like fish, and it's good for you.
